The Algebra Modules address functions and relations, exponentiation, and fields. Preservice teachers explore advanced mathematics content while considering ways of understanding the underlying concepts from the middle school, high school, and university perspective. This is done in an attempt to tie together ideas from K-12 mathematics and the discipline of mathematics in coherent ways. The materials provide opportunities to develop understanding via two approaches: using an advanced mathematical perspective and a Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching perspective. Each module is designed with the intention to connect these two approaches.

While teaching with MODULE(S2) materials, there is so more opportunity for the teacher to understand student reasoning.

Module(S2) Instructor

I learned the importance of teaching algebra conceptually. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t actually understand due to the way I was taught. I want to take my experience as a way to teach my students algebra so that they actually understand it.
